THE SPRAGUE
Turning hard toi make the bend, 1904
Earlier this year, I completed a six foot by ten foot painting for the Rivers Division of American Electrical Power located in Chesterfield, Missouri. The painting depicts the towboat Sprague. She was truly a piece of American river history as she was the largest towboat ever built. She was built in 1901 and had an original crew of over 60. Her record for the largest tow ever pushed remained until the coming of the screw type diesel towboats of the post WWII time period.
